From China with love

Jenwa Xu works in GEA Process Engineering China, which is located in Shanghai, China. Here he holds the position of Automation Project Manager and Team leader in the Electrical and Automation department. He has been with GEA Process Engineering for four years and he is not planning on leaving anytime soon. Keep reading and you will find out why!

“I have been working for GEA Process Engineering for the last four years in a position which allows me to put my skills into practice, but also challenges me, since I have two different roles in the company. I function as a Project Manager, where I work on my own daily tasks, but also as team leader, where my role is to lead the team, divide work amongst them and provide support.”

In China, the economy is growing with tremendous speed. Orders are constantly coming in and the Electrical & Automation department is no exception. Here, new colleagues are joining the company on a daily basis in order to keep up with the number of new projects. Jenwa explains: “This year especially, the financial growth is back on track. We have a lot of projects in the department and business is almost too fast for our technological service department, which has to keep up with the number of projects.”

As a team leader, Jenwa is responsible for 6 other people in his team and for making sure that all projects are running on schedule. “I am very careful in giving direction to my team members. I do my best to support them and we often share knowledge and learn from each other. For me, teamwork is an essential part of my job and something that contributes highly to making my job interesting.”

Setting new standards

As a Project Manager, Jenwa has worked on many different projects including a soybean project, where GEA Process Engineering China for the first time ever, had to develop a soy protein plant with two different production lines, instead of the usual single line; and a milk powder project, where the customer wanted a plant with two parallel production lines, so it had two drying chambers and two evaporators that could be cross-figured, instead of the standard single drying chamber and 1 evaporator. As a result, the customer could operate more flexibly and, in the case of machine breakdown, would be able to continue production. In addition, a pharma project stands out in his memory. Here another milk powder factory plant was ordered and because milk powder plants are food plants, they have to follow strict pharma requirements, which included a lot of testing and validation from Jenwa’s team, in order to meet international standards.

Values from the heart

Jenwa strives daily to fulfill the company values: reliable, customer focus, excellence, teamwork and respect. “In our automation team, we try to answer a customer’s question from a warm heart. We nurture our customers and kindly answer their questions. When a project is finished we maintain the relationship and inform them about new technological improvements that might benefit their business.” For Jenwa the value customer focus is prominent. “Customer focus is key. The customer is the boss and our job is to provide the customer with anything he/she wants or does not know they might want. In one of the milk plant projects, the customer’s plant was located in a remote area. Here, we suggested the installation of a remote monitor system so that if the customer experienced problems with the plant’s coding, we could log on from Shanghai and fix it, without ever visiting the actual plant.”

Reliable is another important value according to Jenwa: “Everything our team does should be done in a reliable way. We execute a lot of tests to ensure that our products and services live up to our requirements. If there is the slightest uncertainty that we are not fulfilling the requirements, we have to fix the problem before delivery, so customers know they can rely on us.”

So if you want to work for a company which takes Teamwork, Excellence, Reliability and Customer focus seriously, come and join Jenwa Xu and our other talented employees in GEA Process Engineering!
